Over multiple days now, whenever visiting insights for my github repository, I keep seeing this:
Referring sites and popular content are temporarily unavailable or may not display accurately. We're actively working to resolve the issue.

I understand that according to the message they are working on it, but its been almost 5 days of me seeing this message. Is this a problem with my account or a general site wide problem?

This isn’t an issue with your account. GitHub Insights has been experiencing a site-wide problem where traffic and referring site data are temporarily unavailable. If you’re still seeing that message after several days, it means the outage is ongoing.

You can keep track of the current status here: https://www.githubstatus.com.

So no need to worry, it should start working again once GitHub resolves it.

Yes — the data is usually still being tracked in the background. What’s broken is the display/reporting, so once GitHub fixes it the stats should appear again.

That link says everything is working normally All Systems Operational, but Traffic stats are still showing the same error message that has been showing for days.

This isn’t actually about your account at all; some parts of GitHub are just having one of those platform-wide hiccups where numbers disappear for a while and pretend nothing’s wrong. If it’s still broken later, it probably means it’s still broken, which is exactly the kind of thing that fixes itself right after you stop looking, or possibly turns into a duck.

That AI generated answer does not help at all and, if anything, it is a big waste of time. Unsubbing here. It will work, if they ever decide to fix it (been about a month now.) Not interested in spam like ^^^ that.

That message is not specific to your account — it’s a known issue on GitHub’s side. The Insights > Traffic section (referring sites and popular content) can sometimes go offline for maintenance or while they fix a data pipeline problem.

It doesn’t affect your repository itself, just the reporting.
Unfortunately, there’s nothing you can do from your end to “fix” it.

👉 The best thing is to keep an eye on the GitHub Status page
where they post updates about incidents. Once the issue is resolved, the traffic data should start displaying again automatically.

Hi @RayBytes, This issue isn’t specific to your account — it’s a site-wide problem currently affecting GitHub Insights. The message “Referring sites and popular content are temporarily unavailable…” appears for many users and is linked to an ongoing backend update to the traffic analytics system.

There’s no action required on your end. GitHub’s engineering team is aware and working on restoring full functionality. You can monitor the status at https://www.githubstatus.com/
— look under “API and Webhooks” → “Repository Insights / Traffic.”

Once resolved, your Insights data will update automatically.

Quick update: Current plan is service restoration is expected to start in early December and insight restoration across repos will roll out progressively over time.

Is there any process to bump repos up in priority in terms of the rollout? Perhaps the people asking here are the most interested in the feature and that will quell some of the noise about it. Just a thought.

I can't even imagine what obstacles there could be to fixing such feature, so the fixing process can take more than 7 months.

No one is pleased about it, but we are working on it.

During yesterday’s rollout to 10% of users, we identified a performance issue not present during testing that required to revert the changes. To resolve this and restore service to the majority of you as quickly as possible, we are prioritizing data for repositories with active recent viewership (more than 3 views/month). We believe this adjustment relieves the pressure on the database and will allow us to proceed with restoration of the traffic insights.

Just to set expectations: we’re not deprecating this service.

The legacy system had hidden complexity, sparse documentation, and was failing in ways the required us building a brand new data pipeline that scales across nearly a billion repos.

That said, we’re on track to start restoring traffic insights tomorrow. So you should see improvements as the rollout progresses.

Finally seeing the familiar Referring sites!
But in the past, Referring sites could show the exact source page; now it can’t. Will this be fixed later?

We're working on making these sites clickable again to get specifics like it used to work. We wanted to get the basic functionality up and running again ASAP, and restoring this is next on the list.

There also is (still) a "bug" where the titles of the Popular content pages in the insights are sometimes non-English (translations) instead of the original title.

Yes, all of the data on the insights page goes back 14 days.

Now all stats do not update since 2 days... ever since the yellow message box disappeared, the stats refuse to update. All graphs ends on the 23rd december on all repos, I have 50 repos and all have the same missing stats.

Did the software / bots took a holiday break? in any case, wishing you all happy holidays. ;-)

I’m experiencing a similar issue: all stats stop two days before the current day (today's the 26th, my stats stop at the 24th).

Since the beginning of this year, stats are not updating for certain repositories for at least 4 days. I looked across 54 repos in total.

New issues:

1. Some repositories have missing stats.
2. Random stat blocks (some show, others don't, and when they do they do not correlate to each other, i.e. impossible stats).
3. I also notice that stats appear and disappear when I click on the "traffic link/tab" a few times, repeatedly, with one or two seconds intervals
4. New repositories created after December 31 2025 do not have stats at all, even though traffic visited it. (mostly bots)

If I understand what you're saying, number 3 is expected, because clicking on the sidebar link for the page you're already on essentially refreshes the page. That's the typical pattern across all of GitHub, including the other pages within the Insights tab in a repository.
